Nutrition and Blackcurrants

Blackcurrants, little berries full of great qualities

  • In the past, blackcurrants were known as “elixir of life”; today, still little is known of the nutritional values of this fruit. Yet it is bursting with goodness for your health:

    • Rich in vitamin C

With 200 mg of vitamin C for 100 g, blackcurrants are way in front of kiwis (100 mg) and oranges (30 - 70mg)

Comparative table of vitamin C contents

  • All the vitamin B’s are present (except for B12, only to be found in animal foods), with an interesting folic acid content (vitamin B9), a vitamin that is essential for the development of the foetus, particularly during the first three months of pregnancy.

    • Rich in fibres

Helps regulate intestinal transit and satiety

    Interesting composition in mineral salts

In blackcurrants minerals are abundant since they contain some 600 mg for 100 g. With a content of 370 mg for 100 g, potassium comes first. Calcium - 60 mg for 100 g – is well-represented (it should be noted that the citrus fruits, said to be rich in calcium, do not provide more than 30 to 40 mg for 100 g), idem for magnesium (17 mg). There are also traces of a large number of oligo-elements (including the rarest, such as selenium, cobalt or chromium...).
With 1.3 mg of iron for 100 g, it contains more iron than most fresh fruit; the presence of vitamin C also contributes towards a better absorption of this iron.

    • Rich in anthocyans (polyphenols)

Polyphenols are to be found in blackcurrants in the form of anthocyans (which belong to the flavonoid category).
Anthocyanines are characterised by their antioxidant properties that are good for the health and in particular against the ageing of the cells.

Blackcurrant nectar, for a fruit ration (health ally)

Blackcurrant nectar offers all the nutritional virtues of blackcurrants since it contains more than 30%. It thus contributes towards the daily fruit intake recommended by the Programme National de Nutrition Santé (PNNS) which recommends eating at least five different fruits and vegetables every day.

Due to their slow carbohydrates and fibres that help to control the glycaemia, fruit (just like vegetables) are included in the diets of people suffering from diabetes.  Type 2 diabetes is one of the complications of obesity.

Without any sugar added, the nectar is particularly suited to diabetes sufferers as well as to pregnant women, sports players, children and elderly people and to all those who want a well-balanced diet.
